History

Atlanta Trilingual Academy(ATA) opened April 2, 2012. The school was founded by Kishion Acosta and Tuni Acosta. ATA’s first location was 3885 Old Gordon Rd. in Atlanta, GA. ATA grew steadily its first few years. At the end of the 2013-2014 school year, the facility no longer suited the needs of a growing school. ATA relocated to 3605 Campbellton Rd. Atlanta, GA that summer. The same summer, ATA opened it’s 2nd location in 2014 at 2581 Spring Rd Smyrna, GA 30080.
ATA operated both locations for the next two school years. At the conclusion of the 2016-2017 school year, ATA consolidated operations and began operating solely at the Smyrna facility. In 2020, after operating for 6 years in Smyrna, and 8 years overall, ATA was able to purchase a school facility on a multi acre parcel in West Atlanta. After a full update of the school building, classrooms, and grounds, ATA opened its permanent home on June 1, 2020.

Kishion Acosta -Founder/Instructional Architect

Kishion Acosta founded Atlanta Trilingual Academy in 2012. Acosta has a long and diverse work history. He has worked for multiple Fortune 100 companies as an engineer. He has taught at every level of academia from preschool to University. He has 30 years of work experience in business starting at the age of 9 as a commission-only telemarketer. He is the architect of Atlanta Trilingual Academy’s instructional program. Acosta is an expert in the science of instruction and a strong proponent of Siegfried Engelmann’s Direct Instruction academic curriculum.

Alma Olmedo – Elementary School Principal

Alma Olmedo joined Atlanta Trilingual Academy in 2013 as a preschool teacher. She graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Applied Linguistics. Olmedo has over 10 years of experience working with children from ages 3 through 6th grade at both public and private schools. She is a past winner of ATA’s Teacher of the Year award. She has experience both as a classroom teacher and school administrator with every grade level of elementary school. She is an expert in the DI teaching model used at Atlanta Trilingual Academy.

Maryori Cepeda – Admissions Director

Maryori Cepeda joined Atlanta Trilingual Academy in 2015. She has over a decade of experience in immersion early childhood education. She’s worked with a variety of instructional approaches and made first hand observations of their merits and shortcomings. She is a graduate of both Florida International University and Western Governors University. She has multiple specialized certifications including as a Child Care Specialist TCC. She conducts staff training on a variety of subjects including: Child Growth and Development, Behavioral Observation, Child Care Facility Rules and Regulations, Health, Safety and Nutrition.

Wenyan Chen – Chinese Department Chair

Wenayn Chen joined Atlanta Trilingual Academy in 2013 as a preschool teacher. She has worked with hundreds of students at all of Atlanta Trilingual Academy’s locations. Her students have the most impressive credentials of any Chinese program in the United States. Some of her achievements include:

  • Youngest Children in the USA to pass Level 1 of the International Youth Chinese Test (Multiple Years)
  • Youngest Children in the USA to pass Level 2 of the International Youth Chinese Test (Multiple Years)
  • Youngest Children in the USA to pass Level 3 of the International Youth Chinese Test (Multiple Years)
  • Youngest Children in the USA to pass Level 4 of the International Youth Chinese Test (Multiple Years)
  • Most Students Passing Level 4 of the Youth Chinese Test than any school in the USA

While teaching in China, Wenyan was awarded first prize as a teaching expert in China’s Wuchang district. She also Won first prize in a Wuhan City teaching competition. She earned her Bachelors degree from Wuhan University in the Hubei province of China and completed her teacher trainining at Jianghan University. She has 10 years of early childhood teaching experience. Her warm and nurturing spirit fosters a love for learning the Chinese language and culture in all of our pre-K students.

Andrea Phillips – Former Director

Andrea Phillips joined Atlanta Trilingual Academy in 2012. She took over as primary Director in 2013. Andrea has extensive teaching experience in both English and Spanish. She has a  degree in Spanish and Applied Linguistics from Georgia State University. She helped in the development of several aspects of the ATA program. Andrea also has a teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. Her qualifications along with her warm and outgoing personality make her a tremendous asset to the Atlanta Trilingual Academy family.

Tuni Acosta – Co-Founder/Former Director

Tuni Acosta co-founded Atlanta Trilingual Academy and served as the preschool's first Director in 2012. She was actively involved in growing Atlanta Trilingual Academy in its early days. She served as both an on-site administrator and assisted with curriculum selection. She served as the school director until late 2013. She remained involved with ATA's operations in various capacities until leaving the school in 2017.
